It was first issued in 1898. The image represents Lake Taupo with Mount Ruapehu in the background and an iconic New Zealand cabbage tree on the left of the image. Originally designed by J Fitzgerald of Christchurch, it was first printed in 1935. It depicts one of New Zealand’s best known birds, the fantail, a tiny yet sociable little bird that almost never sits still during waking hours as it flits from perch to perch.
